Net Metering

Net Metering is a program whereby eligible customers with renewable generation facilities can reduce their net energy costs by generating their own energy behind-the-meter. During periods of time when the generation output exceeds customer load, the surplus energy can be exported back onto the distribution system for a credit against future energy consumption. Excess generation credits are shown and tracked on your monthly hydro bill and can be carried forward for up to 12 months. Northern Ontario Wires Inc. cannot pay customers for any excess generation.

For details, visit the following site: Ontario Regulation 541/05: NET METERING.

Ontario Electricity Support Program

The Ontario Energy Board (OEB) offers programs to help customers with their electricity bills. One of them is the Ontario Electricity Support Program (OESP). It provides an ongoing monthly credit directly on qualified consumers’ electricity bills.

Do you qualify?

If you are the customer of an electricity utility and your household size and income meet certain levels, you may qualify for a reduction on your electricity bill through the OESP.

What support is available?

The amount of the credit depends on 2 factors:

  • How many people live in the home

  • The combined annual household after-tax income

For example, a home with 4 people and an annual income of $65,000 will receive an on-bill credit of $40 each month. This chart shows the different credit amounts.

Customers may receive higher monthly credits of between $52 to $113, based on unique eligibility that includes:

Low-income Energy Assistance Program

If you are behind on your electricity or natural gas bill and face having your service disconnected, you may qualify for emergency financial help through the Low-income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP). There are also customer service rules available that are specific to low-income households. You need to meet certain criteria to qualify for these programs, visit www.oeb.ca/billhelp.

Do you qualify?

Qualifying for a LEAP grant depends on two factors:

  • How many people live in the home, and

  • The combined annual household income.

For example, a home with four people and an annual after-tax income of $65,000 would be eligible for a LEAP Emergency Financial Assistance (EFA) grant. This chart shows if you are eligible.LEAP EFA income eligibility criteria

What help is available?

Emergency Financial Assistance

Customers who meet income eligibility can get up to $650 in emergency assistance for their electricity bills ($780 if their home is heated electrically) and $650 for natural gas bills.

Assistance is only available if you are behind on your bill – or in arrears – and may face having your service disconnected. You cannot receive more money than you owe on your bill. Therefore, you may not receive the full amount of the grant.

Emergency financial assistance is for emergency situations only and is not meant to provide you with ongoing help to pay your bills. For more details.
